The Welsh National Field of Remembrance has opened at Cardiff Castle.

The opening ceremony began with a procession led by Shenkin, the goat mascot for the 3rd Batallion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

First Minister Mark Drakeford led the morning’s dedications with a rendition in Welsh and English of The Exhortation.

Hundreds of people of different ages and cultures as well as veterans gathered in the castle grounds for the ceremony, which included a two minute silence as a tribute for those who gave their lives in service for their country.

The site at Cardiff Castle is one of six created by the Royal British Legion across the UK. It includes more than 5,000 personal tributes.

To mark this years 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, vintage harmony group the Sugar Sisters performed two war time favourites, We’ll Meet Again and I’ll be Seeing You.

Sixteen to 19 year old students from the Cardiff Military Preparation College were part of the team of volunteers who helped to set up the grounds. More than 40 students lined the pathways, identifying the route where the procession of guests and service men were to sit.

The field will be open to the public until 25 November.
